In the ancient medieval village of Camporgiano, stands on a rock spur with its imposing mass, the ancient Estense Fortress. Majestic and fascinating with its towers and walls overlooking the village and the entire valley of Garfagnana. The fortress, built around the year 1000, was then fortified in 1300 by the Lucchesi and finally in the second half of 1400 by the Estensi. It was the seat of vicar and housed the captain of justice and, in those years, Ludovico Ariosto, Este’s general commissioner, visited several times. After the Unification of Italy a part of the Rocca was bought by the Guasparini family and after 1920 with the notary Eugenio Guasparini becomes the entire property of the aforementioned family that transforms the building first used as a prison into a civil home.
In 2020, work began on the regeneration of the complex to transform it today into a multi-building hotel-period residence.
We point out , the small museum, inside the main tower, set up thanks to the ceramic finds found during the excavation campaigns carried out by the local archaeological group.
